1. Data Ingestion Architecture
LiveRoadStatus connects directly to primary governmental transportation feeds, national park databases, and meteorological stations. We deliberately bypass secondary aggregators to avoid relay latency.

2. Separation of Live Status vs. Seasonal Operating Windows
A frequent point of confusion in alpine travel is the difference between a pass being "seasonally open" and "live open today":
- Current Live Status: Reflects road conditions at the pass summit right now (e.g. Open, Restricted due to Chain Laws, Closed due to Rockfall). Live status is only displayed when an active official source was checked within the verified window.
- Seasonal Operating Window: Represents historical climatological norms (e.g. Typically open May through October; closed in winter due to heavy snowpack). Even a pass with a seasonal summer window may be closed temporarily in July due to a mudslide, or open with winter gear in early June.
3. Human-in-the-Loop AI Normalization
State DOT feeds use vastly divergent taxonomy: one agency uses "Code 15 Traction Law", another uses "R-2 Chains Mandatory", while French authorities use "Loi Montagne Équipements Obligatoires".
Our ingestion engine uses automated language models to translate and categorize these disparate municipal notices into normalized status classifications:
- OPEN: Unrestricted travel for standard passenger vehicles.
- CAUTION / RESTRICTED: Open with mandatory winter equipment, chain requirements, high-wind restrictions, or vehicle length limits.
- CLOSED: Road is blocked, gated, or impassable.
- UNVERIFIED: Telemetry feed has been offline for over 2 hours or no official digital feed exists.
Crucially, every high-severity closure event and conflicting agency report is reviewed by our human mountain research team before alerts are broadcast.
4. Staleness and Unverified Pass Policy
If an API endpoint fails, undergoes maintenance, or fails to report a status change for longer than our threshold, LiveRoadStatus immediately marks the pass as Status Unverified. We would rather state that conditions are unverified than present outdated or fabricated reports to motorists crossing remote summits.
